Ditch the doubt, lead with confidence

Lead With Ease

VFX leadership course

Giving VFX team leaders the skills they need to lead confidently and effectively. So that they are less stressed, their teams are more motivated, and they create a more rewarding show experience.

You got into VFX because -

you get to craft cool shots (and blow shit up!) - and it turns out, one of the best things about it is actually the talented people you get to work with!

As a team leader, you really care about helping people achieve the best possible work and have fun doing it - so why does it feel so hard?

Instead, you find yourself thinking:

  • Some people are just really difficult to manage! I don't know how to make them listen to me.

  • I don’t want to ask too much of people. So, you take on more tasks yourself - meaning you're exhausted!

  • I used to know what I was doing - but no-one provides training for this! How do I know what I don’t know?

The result?

You’re working even longer hours and second-guessing yourself. That means you’re stressed at work and at home - so you’re asking yourself, “is this even worth it?”

Sound familiar?

Most new leaders keep doing all of their old job whilst also trying to lead a team. And they’re approaching leadership in the only way they know - how they like to be led. They’ve listened to some leadership audiobooks - but they just don’t seem relevant to VFX.

They care deeply about getting it right - they just haven’t been shown how to apply leadership tools and techniques in such a niche field as VFX.

Lead With Ease is a 9 week course -

that demystifies traditional leadership training and makes it easily applicable in VFX and creative industries. By the end of the course, you will have all the tools you need to lead your team confidently and effectively.

Over 8 modules, you will learn to:

  • Create your unique values-based leadership plan

  • Make yourself heard - by learning to listen

  • Become confident having conversations you’ve been avoiding

  • Learn how to get the best from your team - by flexing your approach

  • Understand what motivates people and how it helps you as a leader

  • Discover how clear processes improve efficiency

  • Learn techniques to manage overwhelm

  • Become confident leading with ease

Who is this for?

Let’s start with who it’s NOT for.

Close this webpage if:

  • Your only interest in leading is to advance your career

  • You’re looking for some magic formulas without you having to put in the work

  • You don’t really want to change how you do things

  • You think leading is telling people what to do

This is truly for you if:

  • You care about the people as much as the work

  • You’ve always naturally taken on more responsibility

  • You’re not half-assed about things: it’s important to you to do things well

  • You like to feel prepared, rather than on the backfoot

  • You have a creative side. It could include music, art, writing, theatre, dance, photography...anything.

  • You work hard - but realise ‘just working harder’ isn’t a sustainable option

  • It’s dawning on you that you are responsible for your personal and professional development

  • You enjoy learning and trying new approaches

  • You enjoy sharing and being part of a like-minded community

  • You’re supportive of others’ growth

  • You don’t take yourself too seriously. Yes, your work is important but we’re not saving lives! Working on cool projects is a privilege and should also be fun!

The Proof

Kareem, VFX Supervisor

"It genuinely made an impact on how I see leadership and how I show up every day.

When I first joined, I was looking for a way to become a better leader.. I used to feel like I had to always be “on top of everything,” and it often left me drained.

What stood out most about the course was how personal and grounded it was .. It wasn’t just theory; it was real conversation, reflection, and genuine guidance.

I also really valued how the course helped me slow down and become more self-aware. Instead of reacting automatically or trying to fix everything myself .. I’ve become more intentional — I listen more, I give space for others to speak up, and I don’t feel the need to control every outcome.

Since finishing the course, I can honestly say that I lead with more calm, more clarity, and more confidence. My conversations with my team feel different now — more open, more focused on understanding rather than instructing. It’s made me more effective and it’s also made my work more enjoyable.

Lead With Ease isn’t just another leadership course. For me, it was a reset — a reminder that leadership is first about presence, not pressure. I’m very grateful for what I learned .. and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to lead in a way that feels both strong and human."

Henning, Head of 2D

I thoroughly enjoyed the Lead with Ease course. Debra is an exceptional coach who presents the information clearly and concisely...

What sets this course apart from similar offerings is ... the weekly assignments where Debra asks you to go through the week’s learnings and apply them to your team. This practical application and seamless integration into my daily workflow has been the most valuable part of the course for me, because not only did it drive home the relevance of the concepts taught that week, but I also experienced the immediate impact of changing my approach - or got affirmation that I’ve been doing things right instinctively. Overall, a massive confidence boost for me in my (relatively) new role as HOD.

Leadership roles rarely come with a set of instructions, especially in visual effects... Lead with Ease fills this gap beautifully, providing an invaluable toolset that helps me navigate the day-to-day of running a visual effects department.

After taking the course, I feel well-equipped to fulfil my role as HOD and I am confident and able to proactively define the role in line with my values and ideas, rather than wait for my managers to hand me a list of requirements.

Lead with Ease is a great course for any current or aspiring lead artist, supervisor, HOD or anybody else within visual effects whose role requires managing people and not just pixels.”

Mandy, Lead Animator

“The course was invaluable, as I was able to take action and implement what I had learned, week by week. There is so much information.. Debra is knowledgeable, and the course was well structured.

...Sometimes you move up, and you become a lead or a supervisor, but nobody tells you how to do it, you just figure it out as you go. With this course, there are actually steps and processes you can work through with yourself, with your team and become better at doing the job.

...I feel like I have more tools in the bag for me to use, not just for work, but for daily life. I will be able to keep what I have learnt in mind with the team moving forward. I feel more confident and happy as a result.

...I would recommend this course to anyone in VFX who found themselves in the same position as myself, where you are a lead, supervisor or HOD, and you may feel like you have hit a ceiling, and not sure how to improve your way of working.

Hello! I'm Debra

VFX veteran and qualified Business Coach.

Starting as a Runner in the 90s, I progressed into an artist role, working on 25+ films* and then, eventually, into leadership - first as an Artist Manager, then as Global Head of Department at a multi-Oscar-winning company, overseeing 160 artists in London and 500 globally across hundreds of high-end film and TV projects.

As one of the first artists at my company to become a Mum, I helped establish flexible working as a genuinely viable option. And as the only female Global HOD, I brought my unique experience to the senior leadership team.

I know this industry from the inside out, at every level.

By 2020, I was ready for a new challenge. Passionate about investing in others' growth, I trained as a Business and Personal Coach - then left my six-figure role (despite being the sole breadwinner at home) to launch Open Frame Coaching. Some said this was a bold move! I was following both head and heart - and it paid off. I've supported 80+ clients across 13 countries to progress in their creative careers and lead themselves and their teams with more confidence.

*My favourite? Batman Begins!

Through that coaching work, a gap became impossible to ignore: there was no leadership training built specifically for VFX. So I built it. Lead With Ease is the programme I wished had existed when I first stepped into a leadership role - and to date, 30+ VFX professionals have completed it, all of whom would recommend it.

Why trust me to run this course?

Essentially, I've been where you are, so I get it!

Leadership training:

Since 2021, I have designed and delivered Leadership Skills programmes to leadership teams at Union VFX, ScreenSkills HETV, Damien Hirst's Science Ltd, Playstack and 3 other award-winning creative studios (games and animation).

VFX understanding:

I have 25 years+ VFX experience, progressing from a Runner at Cinesite, to senior Comp at Tippett, to the Global Head of Compositing at DNEG and have a strong understanding of the challenges faced by team leads in VFX and related industries.

What are my obligations as a student?

You'll need to schedule enough time each week to watch the video lessons, attend the group calls and complete the assignments. The total time per week is 3-4 hours on average.

Ultimately, you are responsible for your own progress and results. I can show you the path, but I can't take the steps for you. By booking a place on this course, you are making a commitment to your development as a leader.

What if I can't make every call?

The online course consists of self-study videos and assignments (with modules released weekly), so it’s fine to make up the time around your other commitments.

Ideally, everyone attends all of the weekly group calls, but if you miss one or two, that’s no problem - calls are recorded and shared on the community space, so you can catch-up on what you’ve missed.

What's your refund policy?

Within 14 days of the start of the program, if you decide this isn't right for you for any reason, just let me know and I'll give you a full refund.
